While people sit at rapt attention during the fastest two minutes in sport, a day at Churchill Downs is a festive celebration. In collaboration with its hospitality partner, Levy Restaurants, the 152 Kentucky Derby menu draws people to the table. From local ingredient to innovative cuisine, these food choices impress even the most ardent critic.

The hospitality team at Churchill Downs raises the bar year after year. It is more than special pairing for that Mint Julep. The food needs have people cheering as loudly as they do when their horse sprints to the front of the pack.

This year, Chef Robert Lopez, Senior Executive Chef for Levy Restaurants and Head Chef at Churchill Downs takes the helm again. After several successful turns in this role, expectations are high for the 152 Kentucky Derby.

As Chef Lopez explained, “Churchill Downs is always committed to honoring its iconic traditions, and this year I’m coming to the table with familiar elements along with some exciting culinary twists. The menu for the 152nd ‘Run for the Roses’ features flavors that will be recognizable to returning guests, including delectable honey bourbon sauces and brown sugar caramelization, while incorporating surprise components to ensure on-track diners are immersed in the full experience.”

What Are Some Must Try Food Items on the 152 Kentucky Derby Menu/

Chef Lopez always does a superb job balancing traditional favorites with few food trends for excitement. More importantly, the menu highlights locally sourced ingredients. Given the scope and scale of this event, it is important to support local purveyors. Additionally, the ingredients have impeccable flavor.

This year’s menu will feed over 100,000 guests across the various dining rooms. From 5,000 lbs of short ribs to 6,000 lbs of carrots, this event is one of the most expansive undertakings of the year.

A few highlights on this year’s menu include: Kentucky BBQ Shrimp & Fava Bean Relish, Brown Sugar Glazed Roasted Carrots & Dill Sorghum Butter, Char Grilled Short Ribs with Pomegranate & Fennel, and Kale Salad with Cider Sorghum Vinaigrette.

All of these dishes are hearty without being heavy. With all the Woodford Reserve cocktails flowing, the menu needs to be substantial. At the same time, a warm spring day does not benefit from heavy dishes. Chef Lopez’s creations hit that sweet spot.

The 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs will be held on Saturday, May 2.
