Did you swoon over the Tacolate? Get ready to scream over the latest ice cream dessert from Taco Bell and Salt & Straw. It is time to indulge in the Churro Ice Cream Taco.
Taco Bell continually drops new food, beverages, and pop culture collaborations. From the first ever Pink Baja Blast Mountain Dew to bringing back nostalgic menu items, every week, there is another reason to run to that drive-thru.
While savory menu items get prime billing on the Taco Bell menu, desserts are equally as important. Whether it is a sippable option or a warm, flakey empanada, many people want to end a meal on a sweet note. Desserts need to tempt people to add them to their orders.
Salt & Straw impresses ice cream lovers with its classic and unusual flavors. From riffs on classic pies to savory forward creations, the popular brand always finds a new way to make ice cream fun and inviting.
The latest Taco Bell and Salt & Straw collaboration follows last year’s Tacolate. For this launch, there are two items that will have everyone talking. Some people might even make the drive to seek out the specialty beverage.
As Liz Matthews, Global Chief Food Innovation Officer at Taco Bell explained, “Last year’s collaboration showed us how much joy there is in reimagining a nostalgic favorite, and we’re thrilled to work with Salt & Straw to bring a new ice cream taco to Taco Bell restaurants. The Churro Ice Cream Taco builds on everything fans loved about the original collaboration, with a flavor that feels right at home on our menu.”

What is the Churro Ice Cream Taco?
While most people would be happy with a taco shell filled with ice cream and dipped in chocolate, Taco Bell and Salt & Straw wanted to amplify the flavor. The new Churro Ice Cream Taco transforms the flavor of a warm, cinnamon covered dough into a frozen delight.
Available at restaurants now, the specialty dessert starts with a crispy waffle cone, fills it with brand-new Churro Ice cream, then covers it with puffed rice and a dark chocolate-flavored coating. It has all the components of the classic choco-waffle, but the new twists make it better.
Churro Ice Cream is a smart move. That hint of cinnamon and sweetness taps into food memories. Everyone can think of a time when they devoured a warm churro at their favorite theme park or restaurant. Putting those flavors into an ice cream hits a sense memory, but makes it new. It is a different way of capturing the nostalgia vibe.
Additionally, adding the puffed rice into the mix puts texture front and center. No one likes a soggy waffle. The little burst of crunch adds to eating satisfaction. These little details are what makes Salt & Straw a great ice cream company.
Lastly, the chocolate-flavored coating is unusual. Since it is not chocolate, it might not melt like traditional chocolate. That idea is good to avoid messes, but the flavor needs to be good. Most likely, this ingredient is for eating enjoyment and will deliver the taste that everyone wants.
Taco Bell Live Mas Café Adds a Sippable Salt & Straw Dessert
Available exclusively at Taco Bell Live Mas Café locations, another Salt & Straw dessert hits the menu. The Salt & Straw Choco-Waffle Chiller takes that frozen taco dessert and transforms it into a sippable form.
The new Chiller flavor starts with a vanilla ice cream, blends in churro crumbles and waffle cone pieces. Then, it is topped with whipped cream and more waffle cone pieces. The whole dessert is served in a cup with a crackable chocolatey shell.
It is interesting that the Chiller uses vanilla ice cream. While it has mix-ins, the flavor will be more subtle than the taco offering at other restaurants.
Additionally, it will be interesting to see how the churro and waffle pieces stand up to being in the vanilla ice cream. While the flavor will be tasty, soggy pieces can be disappointing. Then again, some people might not care if the texture remains crispy. Personally, dipping those pieces in the chocolatey-shell and mixing them into the ice cream might have been a better choice.
Lastly, the crackable shell is a smart move for Taco Bell. If they can leverage this idea to other flavors, it opens a whole new dessert line that can get people running to the restaurant. Just think if there could be a Mountain Dew flavored crackable shell for a Chiller. That idea would be a game changer.
Ready for the first taste of the new Taco Bell and Salt & Straw desserts? The new food items are waiting at restaurants. After one bite, everyone will be asking what is the next collaboration between the two food giants.
