While people head left to grab Mexico’s margaritas, a new beverage has people heading right into World Showcase. Available in the new La Poutinerie, Epcot’s Frozen Apple Slushie is the ultimate refreshment on a hot Florida day.
Even though Disney festivals tempt guests with their specialty booths, permanent food offerings deserve their spotlight. The newest Epcot space, La Poutinerie, sponsored by Air Canada, has a specialty beverage that quenches a thirst.
The Spiced Apple Slushy ($6.29) is delightful. The non-alcoholic, frozen beverage features juicy apple with just the right amount of spicy ginger beer. With a punch of lime, it is well balanced. Never too sweet, it is an easy sipper. Even before the scorching heat melts some of the drink, it is easy to slurp half of it.
The drink comes with a slice of dried apple. While the garnish is nice, it is superfluous. A little lime wedge would suffice. Yes, I ate the apple, but the bottom portion was a little soggy. I would recommend eating the garnish as soon as the beverage hits your hands.
Is the Alcoholic Frozen Apple Slushie Worth the Splurge?
La Poutinerie allows the Frozen Apple Slushie to be upgraded to a cocktail, the Spiced Apple Mule. The standard frozen beverage is blended with Iceberg Canadian Vodka.
Choosing vodka makes sense. The flavors are a classic mule. The downside with the vodka is that it does not add anything to the cocktail. Yes, there’s alcohol, but it does not add significant flavor. That scenario is true of any vodka cocktail. All the other ingredients shine.
Personally, I would have preferred a whiskey, specifically a rye, option. A rye’s spicy notes would complement the ginger beer, apple, and lime. It would both round out the cocktail and keep the balance.
Or, a Canadian whiskey would be nice. A little vanilla or sweetness from a whiskey would add depth. Given all the tartness, that sweet finish would be nice.
Overall, the Frozen Apple Slushie has the versatility to be a non-alc and a cocktail. This beverage could be the future of Disney offerings. Drinks that can be served in both categories are vital for the modern guest. People are being choosy with their drink orders. When they can quench that thirst under both options, Disney ensures a repeat order.
An Unexpected Drink Hack for Epcot’s Frozen Apple Slushie
Drink hacks are always a hot topic. While restaurant brands have long lists of menu transformations, theme park food and beverage options are not necessarily the top of the list. Often people just want to enjoy the menu item as the chefs intended.
With Epcot’s Frozen Apple Slushie, I created a drink hack, unexpectedly. As many people know, it can be difficult to juggle multiple beverages why walking around World Showcase. When I wanted a beer, but still had some slushie in my cup, the solution was simple. I combined them.
Summer and shandies go hand in hand. It is a German staple to cut beer with lemonade or other fruit beverage. For me, it was a simple idea to take my remaining slushie and pour it into my beer.
The reason why this idea works is because the slushie isn’t overly sweet. That ginger spice and lime work with a simple lager. I used the Molson lager, but I could see this idea work well with the Bell’s seasonal beer in American, a blonde ale, or even a German Bitburger.
But, do not try this idea with a Guinness, dark ale, or even that Bud Light. The combination needs a heft but not a heavy beer. In contrast, a light beer would be lost.
Overall, it is an easy way to help the slushie melt a little. For anyone who wants to avoid a brain freeze, it is a fun choice.
During the next visit to Epcot, put the Frozen Apple Slushie on the must drink list. Now there is a real reason to turn right to start the World Showcase journey.
