Recently, Borden launched a contest to determine America’s Favorite Grilled Cheese. The contest asked people to vote for one of four recipes. The contenders were The Classic, The Spicy Big Dill, The Crispy Onion & BBQ and The Mad Scientist.

As the names suggest, the four options were both iconic and trendy. From the tangy flavors to bold spice, there is something for everyone.

In the end, 65% of the votes crowned The Classic as America’s Favorite Grilled Cheese. Although some foodies might find this flavor a little pedestrian, the reality is that nothing beats great bread, perfectly melted cheese and simple, delicious flavor.

At the same time, The Classic grilled cheese is the recipe that everyone should master before venturing into another flavor combinations. If a cook cannot appreciate the balance of bread to cheese, the right amount of crispy edges and even the perfect melt factor, it is impossible to move onto recipes like The Mad Scientist.

The 2026 Grilled Cheese of the Year Captures a Growing Food Trend

According to Borden, the 2026 Grilled Cheese of the Year is the Protein Powerhouse. As many people appreciate, boosting the grams in every meal is a priority. This particular recipe not only captures that ooey, gooey deliciousness of a grilled cheese but also brings all the protein with a few extra ingredients.

This recipe is more than just chicken and cheese. It is a thoughtful combination of flavors. By adding two different Borden cheeses, the cheddar and mozzarella balance the sharpness and creaminess. When combined with the chicken, it is well-balanced.

While this recipe does not have a lot of spice, swapping the classic chicken for a chipotle version or even a smoked version would be nice. As long as the chicken does not overpower the cheese, it would work.

Additionally, this recipe comes with a Powerhouse sauce. Made with brown mustard, garlic, paprika and non-fat Greek yogurt, it is another amplified protein boost. While Borden suggests a drizzle, it can work as a dip, too. But, people should be cautious about adding too much sauce. Nothing should overshadow the sandwich.
