Before the night sky ignites with fireworks blanketing the darkness, another sparkling visual captivates Magic Kingdom guests. In Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away, Disney creatives blend beloved characters and modern stories into a captivating visual spectacle. During those final moments of the day, Disney’s Starlight’s show director inspires everyone to dream in every shape and form.
I had the opportunity to chat with Tara Anderson, who is a show director with Disney Live Entertainment. Magic Kingdom is known for its various shows, parades and nighttime festivities. The newest nighttime parade captures the newstalgia trend in the most delightful way.
For those unfamiliar with Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away, it captures the heart and luminous sentiment of the iconic Main Street Electrical Parade with modern day interpretations. Classic Disney characters and new favorites float down the streets under the twinkling night sky.
Disney’s Starlight Show Director Discusses Storytelling
During my conversation with Anderson about Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away, a key takeaway was the storytelling. It brought back all my childhood memories while still engaging the younger generation.
When asked about bringing together all the generations, Anderson shared these thoughts. “It was important to us to pay homage to the past. We’ve given nods to the past, but with our eyes firmly on the future. It was that idea of acknowledging what was but taking me to what is and what could be.”
That balance of past, present and future is clear with the characters who are part of this Disney experience. Anderson explained, “we wanted to showcase our classic stories, but also our newer stories. All things that can happen under the magic of Starlight. Hopefully, it is all presented in a way that feels new and exciting and opens up a world of possibilities.”
While the visuals draw the eye, the music is equally as important to the overall experience. Anderson acknowledged that Disney has many more creative outlets to use today than what could be done in the 70s or the 80s. Technology does expand opportunities, but Disney storytelling is always the heart of any experience.
Disney’s Starlight Intertwines Music and Visuals
Anderson believes that the music is just as important as the parade’s luminous qualities. Speaking about the music, she said, “we created an original song right for this, our Starlight Anthem. It is a through line throughout the entire parade. It is mixed in with the songs from the different stories. My hope is that that melody stays with you because it really is reinvented every time.”
From Moana’s drums to the mariachis in Coco, it is the connector that unites the characters, the fans, and the community in that shared experience. People do not have to instantly fall under that melodic spell. But, it is a sentiment that resonated when recalling that Main Street moment.
Magical memories fill the Walt Disney World visit. Every person turns each experience into their special moment. The connection across ages, demographics and communities breaks down the barriers in the best possible ways.
While chefs use the table and food as the common connector, Anderson found her own interpretation of that sentiment. Her connecting thread is her storytelling within Starlight.
Anderson said, “the connector is the basic story, that idea of the magic that happens when you’re willing to put your dream out in the world and go after it. Hopefully by the end you get to celebrate it coming true.”
“I think everybody can relate to that idea. Everybody has a dream, right? Everybody, young, old, everyone, is hoping that it comes true and that is what I hope they take away from it.”
Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away is an outdoor parade at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Guests should check with the Disney App for run times and other information. During special nighttime events, the parade may not be available.
